Grand Theft Armor

The Intro

The base is being worked on and taking shape nicely, but it's still just a bit lacking on the equipment side — especially the higher-quality gear, as the Watchers aren't an officially licensed security agency authorized to use the good stuff.

Fortunately, Samuel has some old acquaintances who know all about needing off-the-books access to good equipment, and one of them had an opportunity to offer…

Leatherwell Security Services is a fairly new player in the security biz, having only recently finished all the necessary certifications and paperwork to qualify as a legitimate security provider (and the authorization to buy security-grade armor and equipment).

Since they're relatively unknown in a business where reputation is everything, they have worked hard to establish a Matrix presence where they can show prospective clients what kind of services they will soon have to offer. The downside is that high user-friendliness comes at a slight cost of lowered maximum security levels — wouldn't exactly do to zorch legitimate prospective clients that got just a little too curious, after all.

Unfortunately for them, one of their employees was unsatisfied with his promotion prospects and very interested in the idea of making a quick buck by selling some useful information: Leatherwell Security has arranged for a deal with Securitech Protective Solutions for a preferred-customer discount on their latest product series… And part of that deal is a direct matrix link from Leatherwell to Securitech's order system.

With the right Matrix savvy, that link might be exploitable, and if Samuel were to arrange for a few batches of functional armor to be erroneously disposed as not being up to spec, his acquaintance could arrange for the disposal to be intercepted, and a few of the suits would find their way to Samuel's closet. Isn't it nice how things sometimes work out?

Getting the team together:

General Patton stands at the ready in the Matrix, looking down upon the topography of the local RTG network. "ALRIGHT YOU MISERABLE MAGGOTS!"

Behind him, ten US Marines snap to attention. Never mind that Patton was an Army General…

He pauses. "Aww hell, this is the wrong speech."

The Agents manage not to smirk.

Off in the 47th level of Ubermountain, the lone Dwarf Foehammer character, played by Irish sneaks through the shadows. He stalks his prey - the dreaded three toed mega-sloth. Brandishing his Hammer of Hammering +26 he crests the top of a ridge in Ubermountain, staring down at a group of mega-sloth pups and mentally calculating the number of Xp he'll get for making boots out of them…

«Plot» Irish says, "FYI, I am connected to the matrix via Satlink. Makes my physical location untracable but lowers my init and raises my access TNs"

Hitomi is perhaps the only normal person on the matrix right now. She is busy having an argument with a 13 year old fat kid while she shreds his icon with minigun fire. She's playing Bloodshredder III Online: The Sickening. Hailed as the single goriest simsense game ever made, and hosting some of the most fantastic weapons of all time. Like them multiple-warhead ball bearing bomb launcher, and the homing laser dicer.

<dethlasr152> »> OMG! UR BOTTING!

<BlueFae> »> Quit whining, bitch.

<dethlasr152> »> UR BOTTING I NO IT! UR 2 FAST!

<BlueFae> »> Get a better terminal, dickwad.

General Patton gestures to one of the agents. "SOLDIER! Open a line to Operative Jailbait!"

"HOOAHH!" Says the radioman, initiating a comcall function to Hitomi.

Hitomi's commcall icon bleeps, and she curses a little. She drops a portable shield generator and then answers, "Jailbait here, what's the word?" She asks her earpiece commcoder then, as she works on reloading the enormous machinegun.

The Dwarf Foehammer leaps down upon the back of the smallest of the group of baby mega-sloths and brings his Hammer of Hammering +26, yells "Hi-yah bitches!" and slams the thing upside it's temple. A clap of thunder sounds which alerts all the rest of the sloths in the area, they all look at him.

"uh oh." he says. He's killed the first sloth with his Leap From Shadows attack, but now he's standing there out in the open. "Fuck" he says as the remaining six sloths charge him at 'top' speed. Sloths aren't all that fast,
but Mega-Sloths are well faster than a dwarf is running at top speed. Soon he is beneath a fuzzy pile of angry beclawed formerly herbivorous life forms.

The pile of sloths suddenly explodes outward as a enraged battle yell erupts from underneath it. The Dwarf Foehammer throws the magical weapon and splatters the largest of the Baby sloths against a wall painting its friends in its entrails. Irish's character then pops out a healing potion and downs it quickly as the hammer returns to him. "Buncha fuckin' cunts ya are." using the Judy Mind Trick taught to him by the ancient <Insert NPC Name Here> bug that he exploited he tricks two of the sloths into thinking that their fellows are the enemy. Fur flies.

Irish throws the last sloth off a cliff and watches it howl into the abyss below before spitting in that direction, then engaging in a little dancing. "Ooo yaahh.. I'm so perty.. " once his victory dance is done he goes over to
deal with the messy task of skinning sloths for their pelts.

"Operative Jailbait! This is General Fartypants! You are requested to report for duty, on a matter of utmost felonious intent!"

Hitomi sighs as she drops the shield, and once more liquifies the kid. "Alright, I'm on the way." She says, pausing only to spraypaint her tag on the wall. Her tag is a guy grabbing his crotch, with the subtitle, "Yo Momma was Here" under it. She then disconnects from the game server, and cuts the kid from her commchannels. She sheds her gaming icon, and then at the speed of thought, transfers herself to stand next to the General, "Yo boss."

General Patton slams his riding crop up under one arm. "AGENT JAILBAIT! HOW GOOD TO SEE YOU!" Says the General, then dialing down the volume mods on the icon. "TOday, we're breaking in to an armor facility and stealing armor. Which is better than breaking in to a car factory to steal motorcycles. We're going to engage in some misrouting, some misdirection. In the end, we should be more survivable."

Hitomi nods her head then, and says, "That sounds right up my alley. In fact, I did something similar not too long ago at all."

She continues- "I'm ready whenever." and then something seems to occur to her, "Oh, actually, wait a minute. Mind if I call a friend of mine? He can probably help us out."

"Is your Agent Reliable?" Asks the General. "Is he locked and loaded, young dumb and full of cum, is he READY TO RUMBLE?"

Hitomi rolls her eyes at the General, "He's good. I've worked with him before and I trust him." She says, simply. She adds, "I'll give him a call."
And then… that is exactly what she does. She opens a commline with Irish.

General Patton settles back, offering a grunt. "Then call your agent."

The Dwarf receives a comm ping and says. "Oi.. go ahead luv." squishy squelchy sounds come over the link as he skins the sloth. "Just makin' a pair o' boots, neh?"

Hitomi smiles a little, "Hey hon. I got a job for you if you're interested. Can't promise pay, but it should be a wild ride."

Mr. Toad shifts his icon.

"Sure luv… Where ya need me?" The Dwarf says, standing up over the fallen and bloody bodies of his foes.
Irish puts on his new and still squishy boots and cracks his knuckles.

Hitomi beams over her current address, "Just meet me here. I'll see you in five ok?"

"Roger that." Deorgor the Foehammer says. Then executes a graceful logout from the game and appears back in his home node.

Exactly 5000 microseconds later, The Wandering Irishman logs into the host and rezzes into existence.

Mr. Toad raises a froggy eyebrow at Hitomi. "Just you, rrrrrrrbt?" Asks Mr. Toad.

Hitomi shakes her head, "No, I said just meet me, I didn't say no-one else was here." to Mr. Toad, and then she turns her attention towards the wandering Irishman, "Alrighty then. The team is assembled. Irishman, this is…" she glances back at Mr. Toad, not entirely sure what to introduce him as, she peters off a little.

Mr. Toad hops forward, looking like a frog in a business suit and a monocle. "Ribbbbbbt. Mr. Cornelious J. Toad at your service, Mr. Irishman. Croaaaaak."

"Uhh… Evenin'." Irish says, giving a tip of his tophat. He then looks at Hitomi's icon. "So what's the plan, luv?"

Hitomi smiles and looks towards mr. Toad, "This is the man with he plan this time. Just where are we going to be comitting our felonious acts today, Mr. Toad?" she asks him.

"Rrrrrrrrrrt. Today, we are stealing personal armor and other accoutrement. The target is Leatherwell Security Systems. They make corporate security level personal protection sycccccccrrrrrrrroooooaksytems."

He coughs then. "Oh my, so sorry. Leatherwell has a production agreement with Securitech systems.. and I've found a backdoor in to their system."

"Well.. that's handy." The Leprechaun says, rubbing his greedy little mitts together. "What we lookin fer?"

Hitomi nods her head as she listens rapt to the description of the job and she grins, "alright, sounds like a job alright. Any idea on the kind of security we'll be up against?" She asks Mr. Toad then.

"That, croaaaaaaaak… is part of the mission."

"So it's a recon mission then?" The Leprechaun asks.

You paged Mr. Toad with 'What you know: Leatherwell security's a fairly new setup. Took advantage of some instability between the existing service providers to underbid a couple of disputed contracts. Didn't make them any professional friends, but them's the breaks in the biz.'.

You paged Mr. Toad with 'They're still in the phase of growth where they need to keep expanding a bit longer before they'll be independently viable, but at the same time pressed to fill what they've got. Make or break - which is why they contracted for the best of the latest in personal armor. Gotta make a
name somehow.'.

Hitomi shakes her head, "As I gathered, we're going in to actually steal some shit." She says to Irish, "Well, I guess we'll find out the level of security when we get there. Ready?" She asks the other two.

"Hererrooooook… is what I know. Leatherwell's servers are recently set up, and are done by the lowest bidder; they played two companies off each other and made no friends in the process. They arn't as strong as they could be yet, as they focus on other avenues of their business."

Hitomi nods her head, "So we'd best use this window to it's fullest." She comments. "Alright, well, I'm in. Lead the way, frogman. Unless we're going alone?" She knows that's how he works sometimes.

"Was born ready, luv." Irish says with a grin and re-rezzes to re-appear at the specified Matrix address's portal.

Mr. Toad derezzes, appearing at the same location as Irish. He sets his reality filters then, becoming, to himself, a man standing on the bridge of a starship. "All systems nominal." His icon becomes the Starship Enterprise.

Irish looks around. "The hell ?" he says, having never seen an episode of Star Trek in his life.

Well then. Johny just looks like some kind of retro starship from the last century.

Captain Kirk calls out… "Helmsman, transfer power from engines to the cloaking device. We're going silent running."

"But Captain… we are forbidden by the treaty from utilizing cloaking technology."

"Wonderful thing about a cloak, Mr. Sulu… is that they have to see us to complain."

"Aye sir. Transferring power."

«Plot» Captain Kirk says, " Lowering Evasion to 2, raising DF to 12"
«Plot» Captain Kirk says, " Sorry, its masking I raise, and 12 is my new tally"
«Plot» Janie says, "Noted. Samuel's Evasion at 2, DF at 12."

Hitomi rolls her eyes, "Some old sci fi. You'd proably like it, the women wear short skirts." Comments Hitomi. Then she reaches up for the side of her visor and pushes a button. The visor transforms into a full head helmet, with breath mask. Her clothing changes into ninja garb.

«Plot» Hitomi says, "I'm going to use my Switching echo to do some matrix hocus pocus. Swapping 4 points of bod for 4 points of Masking, which makes my masking 12 and my bod 6"
«Plot» Janie says, "Also noted."

Reality filters; what a blast. The bridge lights dim, showing in emotion and lighting that they are 'sneaking'. "Short skirts is always a bonus in my book." The Leprechaun says, chuckling.

The Leprechaun whips out a ninja mask and puts it down over his top hat. Then he shows a big ass cartoon style police badge to the logon portal's icon. "Open says me, bitches."

The portly doorman looks somewhat askance at the leprechaun's odd mode of address, but opens the portal regardless. "Good evening… Sir," it says politely. "May I ask what brings you here?"

"Yes" The Irishman says. "I'm looking fer the Pizza Cave's online orderin' site?" looking at the portal. "Large extra crusty with cheese?"

You paged (Captain Kirk, Hitomi) with 'Both of you perceive the impulse responding to Irish' clumsy access attempt, and some form of IC coming to life and going in for a closer look at the weird access attempt…'.

Mr. Spock, the sensorman, looks down in to his little glowing blue box… "Captain, we seem to have encountered a life form… it seems to be showing signs of sentience and attention to the USS Irishman."

"I see. Ship to ship."

"Channel open, Captain."

"This is Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise to the Captain of the Irishman. You have.. attention, Captain. So soon, in to this mission. Perhaps you could try a new vector?"

Hitomi glances towards the IC incoming, and frowns. "That was a messy entrance, hon." She glances to the USS Enterprise, and then back to Irish. "Either that or this host is /touchy/"

"Captain… I show the life form is a limpet class parasite of a class Trace-6. It's displaying a curious… Ah… Yes. It's hardened against attack. Fascinating." Says Mr. Spock.

"On line, Captain."

"Transfer that Data to the USS Jailbait and the USS Irishman."

«Plot» Captain Kirk says, " I transfer the composition of the IC to Hitomi and Irish. R6 trace with armor."

"KEPTAN!" Says Chekov, the weapons man. "De USS Irishmahn es opening fire, full phasers on the lifeform…"

"Steady as she goes, helm. Weapons hold."

"Aye sir, steady as she goes." Says Sulu.

"Aye sir, weapons hold." Says Checkov.

An arrow flies true from the Irishman's bow and hits the Trace IC squarely but has minimal effect. Not waiting to confirm, he rapidly strings a second arrow and lets it loose on the IC. Both leave a shimmery path in the air that fades over time.

The IC doorman looks surprised at the first arrow, and dead from the second. He starts to crumple to the ground.

«Plot» Irish says, "Supress IC sacrificing 1 HP"
«Plot» Janie says, "IC down and suppressed."

"Dat's right." The Leprechaun goes over to the doorman. "Knocked da fuck out." He squats over the doorman's head in a mock teabag before looking back at the portal. "Now then… " the bow disappears and the cartoon badge re-appears.

And with the trace's demise, you finally have a chance to look around…

The host's sculpting is of a sumptuously appointed showroom, with various display stands and video screens of Leatherwell's currently running trid advertisements. Politely smiling automated greeter icons welcome each prospective customer and field any questions they can answer to keep the customer comfortable while a live representative is contacted. Soft background music plays in a constant loop that has been calculated to be just long enough not to irritate prospective customers by its repetitiveness without actually having any kind of artistic value.

Commlink-Wandering Irishman> Irish says, "Wow.. Ya'd think they'd hire a bloody Node designer or something.. Yuck."

The USS Enterprise hovers in its own reality, sort of crappy for a sculpted system. The nebula is a dangerous place, with only a few safe places to linger. "Science Officer."

"Yes Captain?" Answers Spock.

"Deionize our partial trail. I don't want these people tracing us back to the alpha quadrant."

"Aye sir. Redirecting our data trail."

Hitomi's visor flashes green, and then a beam of interlacing lasers sweep left and right over the area, eventually narrowing and locking onto a red phone on the desk. "Aye Aye captain." She comments as she heads towards the thing, "Looks like we've got our way in."

Irish moves to the next logon portal and displays his badge. "Little pig little pig let me in." he says. The access portal allows him entrance and derezzes to move to the next node.

The QA host is even more utilitarian than the purchasing host. Those of you who aren't using a full-on reality filter simply see rack after rack of suits of armor, each marked with a green or red light above the pallet to designate pass or fail.

The design spec of the armor itself is fairly impressive; light security grade armor over a form-fitting fullsuit, with full BattleTactm hookup and receivers integrated into the suit itself for maximum ease of use. Various pockets and adjustable harness hooks allow for easy carrying of any kind of firearm the wearer might favor, and the accompanying helmets contain optical visual magnification systems for that mage-friendly touch. Needless to say, the QA process is /very/ intensive as the PR damage from a suit not being up to spec when a wearer needed it can be devastating…

«Plot» Janie says, "You'll need a Locate File to find the QA logs, Edit File to mark a good batch as bad, and then a Locate and Control Slave to move the crate to disposal."

The Enterprise snaps out of Warp Drive, coming to coast quietly through space. Sensors quietly read the environment, reporting the data. "Helm to one oh eight. Come about to mark 42. Spock, engage the sensor scan to locate the access point…" Kirk says, his muscles rippling and sweaty, his shirt for some unknown reason, torn to the waist.

The ship, a massive ring like vessel standing on its edge, has a line of product lots passing through it in momentary halts.

"Excellent Spock. Relay the data to the other ships. Dispatch The Jailbait and the Irishman to the Disposal Sector… We'll handle this ourselves."

Captain Kirk hangs motionless in space, watching the Irishman on the main screen.

Irish poits over to the coordinates given by the Kirkster and rezzes back into focus. Spying the icon for the slave node he fires up his handy dandy spoof utility, which forms around him like a shield making him look like a generic UMS icon briefly. He jabs his hands into the node and fiddles.

The control system for the robotic lifters consider the Irishman's commands, and after a few moments' pondering decide it's perfectly valid. The pallet is shifted from the ready stockpile to the disposal area.

Captain Kirk narrows his eyes. "HELM! Bring us about! Weapons to full! Transfer energy from life support to Phaser Banks! Sulu, open fire on the Romulan Scout!"
